The underground railroad was a system used by the slaves to find a way to their freedom. Many whites put their life on the line to help slaves escape. In hiding slaves recieved food, and clothing, and shelter. Some of the slaves were caught and killed, and the whites who helped them were also killed. There were many famous black people to escape to freedom. One of them was Harriet Tubman. She was the reason for so many slaves escaped to freedom.
